Almost everyone knows that doing more exercise and reducing calorie consumption will promote weight loss. But if weight loss is this simple, then why are so many people failing miserably despite their desperate efforts? In the 1960s, there were no low or nonfat foods, nutrition labels were pretty much non-existent. People who wanted to lose weight usually just put a little less food on their plates and cut out the obvious offenders, like desserts and potatoes. If you actually wanted to know exactly how many calories were in your food, you had to go buy a book. Almost nobody did … but amazingly, there were fewer fat people.
Now we have every kind of low or nonfat food imaginable and nutrition labels with calorie counts are everywhere, but there are more fat people. Matter of fact obesity is an epidemic in North America and other parts of the world. You’d think this little bit of history would convince people that accurate calorie-counts and eating those low fat or nonfoods isn’t the key to losing weight. And of course, you’d be wrong. They’re still convinced it’s all about low fat foods and counting calories.
Stop counting calories
Rather than helping people accurately track their energy surplus or deficit, calorie counting has given people a false sense of control over their diet and physical activity levels. Calorie counting hides the scientific fact that you must burn fat NOT CALORIES to lose weight.
Instead of being the “magic bullet” that enables us to lose that gut once and for all, we end up burning up all our willpower on a task that is evidently ineffective at promoting weight loss.
You can’t eat a calorie you can’t store it as fat, calories can’t make you fat. There is no such thing as different kinds of calories. Since calories are a measure of energy, there cannot be, as some dietitians claim, different types of calories. A fat calorie has the same amount of energy as a protein or carbohydrate calorie.
According to the calorie counter world to lose weight you just have to reduce calories. For example a man needs an average of around 1900 calories a day to maintain weight any calories less than that he will lose weight. So put a man on 1400 calories a day diet of cookies, fruit, and pie and he will LOSE WEIGHT or better yet 1400 calories of pizza cookies and beer a day! Yes, just reduce the calories and watch the weight fall off. Wrong!
Most people can count calories but most have no clue about where fat lurks in their diets. Sadly even fewer give carbohydrates much thought, or know why they should.
But a growing number of top nutritional scientists blame excessive carbohydrates — not fat — for America's ills. They say cutting carbohydrates is the key to reversing obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. "If Americans could eliminate sugary beverages, potatoes, white bread, pasta, white rice and sugary snacks, we would wipe out almost all the problems we have with weight and diabetes and other metabolic diseases."
It's a confusing message. For years we've been fed the line that eating fat like the skin on the chicken or red meat would make us fat and lead to chronic illnesses. "Dietary fat used to be public enemy No. 1," says Dr. Edward Saltzman, associate professor of nutrition and medicine at Tufts University. "Now a growing and convincing body of science is pointing the finger at carbs, especially those containing refined flour and sugar."
WHY? Because when we eat carbohydrates our body converts them in to glucose. Glucose that is not burned as energy is turned into and stored as FAT! We have become fat not from dietary fat but from the excess carbohydrates that have been converted by the body into FAT.
Americans, on average, eat 250 to 300 grams of carbs a day, accounting for about 55% of their caloric intake. The most conservative recommendations say they should eat half that amount. Consumption of carbohydrates has increased over the years with the help of a 30-year-old, government-mandated message to cut fat.
Americans are told by the U.S. government [food pyramid] and nutritionists to eat up to 20 tsp sugar at each meal: breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Body Fluids and Electrolytes, pages: 71- 72.
The sad result! The nation's levels of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease have risen. "The country's big low-fat message backfired," says Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. "The overemphasis on reducing fat caused the consumption of carbohydrates and sugar in our diets to soar. That shift may be linked to the biggest health problems in America today"
